Then while timothy and Phillip are on the raft, tragedy strikes, Phillip has lost his vision. Then after a couple of days timothy sees an island nearby. Then all of a sudden they know there could be a storm coming, so now they know that they have to get to work immediately.
But it is going to be awful hard when they don’t have any water. They also know that they should make some type of signs; also they go looking for food and water so they can survive. But then in the next couple of days timothy gets very sick and doesn’t know if he can survive. So then they have a couple of days off then timothy realizes that he must teach Phillip everything he can so he can survive.

Then after timothy feels a little better he teaches Phillip how to fish. Then they knew it was coming timothy says hurricane!!!!!!!! Phillip grabs some food and they run for shelter. Then the hurricane wind speed and power destroys the island. Next Phillip has realized that the hurricanes power has killed timothy.

Philip fells like he will die after timothy has died but as Phillip is wondering around the island in a couple of days Phillip has learned how to make black smoke, Phillip lights it on fire hopefully someone will see it. Then more luck happens someone sees the smoke.
He returns back home and he had operations on his eyes and then he regains his eyesight. He says that not all black people are bad and he talks about timothy and the things he did to help him.

The whole purpose of this story was to tell you that everyone can overcome their prejudices and fears to help you grow into adulthood.

Jordan Gotchy -- Phillip's Journey

The Cay

Phillip’s Journey

By Jordan Gotchy

In The Cay our hero, Phillip, leaves home with his mother because of World War II. He is then separated from her when the S.S. Hato is torpedoed. He is brought aboard a raft by Timothy. During the next few months many things occur that transform Phillip into a mature man. He creates a better world for himself because he overcame his prejudices.

Phillip’s mother was scared of the war in Willemstad. She decided that she and Phillip would return to Norfolk, Virginia. They say farewell to Phillip’s father and then boards the S.S. Hato. While aboard, the boat is torpedoed by German U-boats.

Phillip wakes up on a raft with an old black man named Timothy. The two of them stay adrift on the raft for several days while Phillip acts distasteful toward Timothy for the color of his skin and the way he rations the little food and water they have. While on the raft, Phillip loses his sense of sight, making the situation more difficult for the both of them. After about another day, they find a small island where they decide to stay.

Timothy –and Phillip- immediately get to work. While on the island, they build a shelter, a water catching trough, a signal fire, and a help sign. Phillip’s senses of touch and hear start making up for his sight, but Timothy still has to do much of the work. One morning Timothy wakes up with a dire fever and cannot move. The two of them rest for the day.

Timothy is fine the next morning, but not as strong as he was before he became sick. He is worried that he may die. For Phillip’s sake, Timothy teaches him several things in order for Phillip to survive in the unfortunate, but likely event of Timothy’s death. Phillip learns how to fish and is now unafraid of climbing palm to retrieve coconuts.

One day Timothy listens to everything around him. He recognizes the noises: a hurricane is coming. Timothy preps their belongings and they wait for the hurricane. The hurricane reaches the island and floods it. The rain and wind was so harsh, their clothes were torn by it, and Timothy had to cover Phillip with his body. When the hurricane was over, Phillip realized that Timothy had died from the harsh storm. Phillip lives on the island for a few more days. He makes a signal fire that burns black smoke, and lights it when he hears an aircraft. In just a few hours, a boat picks him up.

He returns to Willemstad and after three operations, he regains his eyesight. Now, after knowing a black man and understanding that they are not a bad people, he speaks to the colored folk where he lives because he no longer believes that colored people should be avoided or treated differently from him.

Phillip’s story demonstrates an exact hero’s journey. During his voyage he overcomes fear and prejudiced views with help from Timothy. Phillip proves himself to be a true, epic hero.

Roy McConnell Respect

A good way you get respect is to show respect.Another way is to not start probems with people that havent done anything to you.
there is another way to get respect in this world is to be nice to
other people that deserve it.Another way is when somebody needs help then you should help them. But there's other ways to get respect
the more education you have the more respect you get.and as long as you don't pick on people smaller than you you will get respect. And
the last thing is the more girls you treat with respect the more respect you will get.

~Wendy fuentes Respect~

There are many ways to get Respect
i think one of the ways to would be in school for example treat other like you want to be treated .
For me i get more Respect from my teachers by working hard and turning all Ur homework in oh and attending every day in school and not getting in trouble Alot
When I'm in school i get respect by my friends i would be kind to them or do them favors when they ever need it i also let them borrow money when they asked me
But my last thing would be getting respect on school but working in groups i help anybody that i see that they need help i help them when they ever need school supplies or like giving them pencil or papper nd a really great way to get respect is by not talking when somebody is talking or when the teacher is talking
But i think there is just alot of great ways to get respect.

Jazmin Mozqueda"respect''

I think the way to get respect at home is by following your parent's directionsand doing good at school. I do think that cuz when i behave good, my parents trust me more. Then at school, if you don't get in a lot of trouble and do your work, teacher's will respect you for trying. With my friends, i help them when they need it, then they help you too.And if you want them to respect you , you have to be nice to them. You cant get expect to be treated right if you dont treat people right .If you treat them in a bad way they'll probably treat you bad to.And that isin't respecting each other. Finally at work, if you dont do your job rightthey wont think your good enough. When i work i try to do my job right and i also try to help any one i can.

Monica Nolasco Gutierrez Respect-final draft

there are many ways to get respect in school. To get respect in school you should;treat others with respect like being nice, working hard , attend every day and also go to every class and do your work. Second to get respect in your own home, you should do your chores.Listen to your parents.don't talk back. The most important role is not to fight with your brothers and sisters. Also to get respect from friends you should be nice to them when they are down, don't argue with them because you don't want them mad at you. Respect their privacy. And don't lie to your friends or else they won't trust you.If your in a group by earning respect you should be nice. Don't get in fights with your group. Don't say stupid stuff thats going to get you in trouble. Respect them and they will respect you. To get respect in church you should first respect the paster. Second you should listen to the preaching. Also respect every one in church. And be nice to the people you don't like. In conclusion those are the many ways to get respect.

Violet Lopez 'RESPECT'

There are many ways to get respect from many places. One of the ways to get respect from school, would be to attend to school everyday. Another way could be to treat others nice so you can get your respect back. You can also get your respect from church, by listening to what the pastor is preaching. Another way would be to follow their instructions and do what they asked you to do. You can also get your respect from your friends by treating them nice and careing for them. One way to get respect from gorups is by listening to what their telling you and to follow their instructions. You can get your respect from home by listening to your parents nd do what they tell you to do so they can respectyou. As you can see there are many ways to get respect from different places. [;

Two ways that i get respect at home is to act appropriate and do all my chores. Two other ways to get respect at school are to attend everyday. Work hard and work hard and treat others with respect. ways to get respect with friends are to have fun and dont be to serious all the time or dont talk smack about anyone of your friends ways that i get respect in a group are to work hard and respect others. some ways that i get respect on a team are try hard and never give up or even be the best one on the team.

Karina Rios!!!RESPECT!!!

There is many ways you can get respected but theese are the ways I know I can get respect back to me like say at home I just do what they tell me to do and do my chores with out arguing with anyone and just pay close attention what they tell me to do.The ways I get respected at school is that I listen and be nice to the teachers and attend everyday oh and not being tardy and doing my work and trying my best :)!!!now with my friends I just give them advise that I would like to hear and telling them to make good choices and of course helping them out!Now lets say in groups or clubs well on teams its the same thing you just have to work together and not trying to act all hard work together and play along and work as a team=]!Last but not least at church listen to the priest and dont be loud!!!Well thats it for now but there is many other ways to but this is how i get it=]!!!

Jenny Escalera Guerrero RESPECT

There are many ways and places you can get respect. Like a school, you have to attend, do your work and follow directions. At home you can clean up your messes or make dinner, or anything that will help. On teams you have to always try hard and do your best. In clubs or groups you can get respect by particapating and always doing you best to help out. With friends you have to just be nice and respectful. At church you have to be quiet and not distrub others. So basically everywhere you go the only way you can get respect is by treating other the way you wanted to be treated.

Robin Dhatt Respect

There are many ways to gain respect but the ways i gain respect are when i am at home i get respect by being nice and also by doing chores. Another way is to not talk back or to do things without being told. The ways i get respect at school is to treat things as if they are yours and to come to school prepared and ready to learn. Also to treat teachers and elders with respect. The ways i gain respect with my friends are to be nice and not to ever fight with them. Also to be yourself and dont try to be someone your not. The ways i get respect on teams is when im playing basketball dont be a ballhog and be nice. Also dont show an attitude. The ways i gain respect in groups is to be yourself be generous and dont fight with them or anybody.

Rebecca Puig--Respect

There's so many ways you can get respect in life and im going to tell you how you can get the respect you want. One way you can get the respect you deserve at home is to do what you are either told or asked to do.A way to get respect at school os to show or give everyone the respect you'd expect to get in return. The way to gain respect with your friends and in groups is to do things with them and help them with what they need help with instead of doing nothing and having them do everything. To get respect at work is by showing up everyday and doing your work.On teams a good way of getting the respect you want is to not be lazy and be a team.Last but not least how to gain respect at church is to always go and listen and learn all you need to know.

nicolle crouse respect

While at home I get respect by doing what I am told.I try to be as helpful as I can and I also dont talk back to my family. While hanging out with my friends I get respect by not talking behind eachothers backs and by listening to my friends. While at work when I babysat for some guy I got respect by showing up on time.I also payed attention to what I was doing and didnt just let his son run off. While being on a softball team I got respect by not making fun of someone because they couldnt do something.I also did by cheering my team mates on while at games.Last by not least while in a group I get respect by not making fun of others work.

robby courser-respect

I get respect at home by doing my chores and by doing all my homework.I get respect at school by working hard and treating others the way i wanted to be treated.Another way to get respect at school is by being there every day.I get respect in groups by being a good helper and doing the right thing.I get respect on a team by doing my best and working hard

Jasmine White--Respect

I get respect at home by doing my chores, being friendly, and on occasion, talking to my parents. Though my sister never shows me any respect. I'm given respect at school when I work hard, listen to the teachers, and sometimes, when I treat others kindly. In groups, I'm respectful by listening to someone else's ideas. With friends, I give my respect by just having a fun time, hanging out with them , or what ever it is we're doing. I also listen to my friends when they need me to. On teams, I show my respect, and get respect back, by working as a team with the others. I do my best and give it my all.

Jordan Wood--Respect

To earn respect at home, I have to have good grades, get along with my siblings, listen to my mother , and fulfill all my responsibilities. Those include keeping my room tidy, doing the dishes on my dish night, and doing my own laundry.

When I'm at work, for respect, I do my job and get along with other employees. Being obsequious to your boss also helps. ;-)

In groups, I find that if I participate, and especially become a leader of myself, or for the entire group, I receive respect from other members.

To get respect with my friends, I help my friends when they need it. I also listen to them an I am honest with them.
