Jasmine White-Phillip's Journey

In The Cay our hero, Phillip, leaves home with his mother because of a war that is happening all around them. He is then separated from her when the S.S. Hato is torpedoed. He is brought aboard a raft by Timothy. During the next few months, many things happen which transformed Phillip into a man. He creates a better world for himself because he matured.
In the calling, Phillip’s mother becomes terrified of the war. At the threshold, both Phillip’s parents argue about him leaving the island and come to a sad decision. As the descent, Phillip and his mother leave the island on the S.S. Hato.
Heading into the abyss, the Hato is hit by a torpedo and sinks, placing him on a raft with Timothy. As the raft drifts on the water, they land on a deserted island at the back of the Devil’s Mouth. Timothy becomes Phillip’s mentor, helping him with his blindness. Phillip learns to survive on the cay and becomes independent of Timothy in the process. Soon Phillip, in the transformation, is on his own and swims for lobster, builds a hut and water catchments, and figures out how to make black smoke.
In the return, Phillip is rescued and returns to his family. Doctors give Phillip back his eyesight. Phillip becomes friends with the Natives and matures.
Phillip’s story reveals a true Hero’s Journey. Phillip is called to leave on the Hato. During his journey, he overcomes being blind with help from Timothy. Phillip proves himself to be an epic hero.
